Housing

Below you will find a list of various housing options and services offered at Cal and around the Berkeley Area. Although this list is updated frequently, it is important to note that this list is not exhaustive.

Residence Halls

Students of all genders are welcomed at UC Berkeley, and housing is committed to fostering a safe, equitable and inclusive experience for all. Gender inclusive and LGBTQ+ affirming environments are available in University Housing. The housing application provides students with an opportunity to self-identify or provide any individual information to assist housing staff in making an appropriate housing offer.  A dedicated housing coordinator works with students on individual requests and all information is kept confidential.  Advance information is appreciated and allows for a better opportunity to serve individual needs.  The goal is to provide all students with a smooth transition to campus and housing accommodations most conducive to academic success.

Gender Inclusive & LGBTQ+ Affirming Housing Options

Campus housing provides several options in the residence halls and apartments to support LGBTQ+ students.  Transgender, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming students who wish to live in an all-gender, gender inclusive housing assignment, and LGBTQ+ students hoping for supportive and affirming roommates can learn more about the housing options available to them here.

If you are medically transitioning or going through gender affirmation surgery, and believe you may need housing accommodations to support you during your recovery, you can learn more about and access the ADA accommodations process here.

UNITY Theme Program

Students interested in further exploring queer and/or trans identity and who wish to live in community with other LGBTQ+ students may be interested in applying for the UNITY Theme Program.

The UNITY Theme Program is unique to UC Berkeley, pioneering in its intentional focus on gender and sexuality, supported by the Gender Equity Resource Center with academic connections to the Gender and Women’s Studies department and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) studies minor. The UNITY Theme Program is an affinity space for LGBTQ+ students and their allies and offers gender inclusive housing. In addition to creating a safe space for students of all identities, UNITY embraces honest dialogue about gender, sexuality, and intersectionality as a means towards self awareness.

The UNITY Theme Program has a live-in Theme Program Resident Assistant who provides resources and support for residents in the community. As part of the living/learning experience, UNITY residents enroll in a weekly for-credit academic seminar that incorporates discussion and self-reflection. The fall seminar explores LGBTQ+ identities, communities, history, visibility & representation, while the spring seminar provides an introduction to queer theory and queer leadership through a contextual education volunteering/internship experience. Students in the theme program participate in socials, community outreach and activities, event planning, and have meaningful interactions with faculty and staff. UNITY students grow as leaders, get connected to the campus LGBTQ+ community, and make friendships that can last a lifetime.
